jewishnorthshore is your reminder that you are part of a vibrant, bold and sometimes daring Jewish community north of Boston. A community that is religiously diverse, embracing Orthodox to Reform and everything in between, geographically dispersed, encompassing 23 towns and cities on the North Shore, and home to 20,000 Jewish households. The Jewish community on the North Shore is bound by history and traditions and lives by the tenet of taking care of one another.
The history of the North Shore Jewish community in Massachusetts dates back to 1855 when Simon J. Weinberg and his wife Hannah made their home in Lynn. Other arrivals soon followed, attracted to employment opportunities in the booming shoe industry. Other Jewish newcomers found employment as merchants, shopkeepers and tailors. As Jewish neighborhoods became settled and families grew, Weinberg and others set out to establish the institutions that would serve the Jews of Lynn and the North Shore for decades.
Fulfilling the community's need for one central agency to be responsible for unifying the good work done by these institutions, and to address the needs of our Jewish communities overseas, the Jewish Federation of the North Shore was founded in 1938.
Today, more than 20,000 Jewish households under the umbrella of the Jewish Federation of the North Shore are located throughout 23 cities and towns north of Boston on the beautiful North Shore of Massachusetts. Hundreds of Federation volunteers and a small staff continue to raise and allocate funds to sustain local agencies, as well as to support a vast number of programs and services offered in our community, nationally, in Israel, and throughout the world. In addition to fundraising, we are a community planning team, creating and implementing programs that educate, stimulate, inspire and unify the Jewish people in our community. We are dedicated to our primary mission, which is to provide our children, grandchildren and young adults with positive Jewish experiences, programs and services so they will be and remain committed Jews. The Jewish Federation of the North Shore strives to preserve our rich legacy of compassion, concern and commitment to the Jewish people and to forge a link in the chain of Jewish continuity from one generation to the next.
