Money available for Israel Programming

After a series of conversations and committee meetings, it became clear that our community is looking not only for one or two Israel related events a year, but programming throughout the year that will connect community members to Israel educationally, culturally, socially and spiritually. In addition, given the large geographic area that constitutes the North Shore, we discussed the need for local as well as community-wide programming.

To these ends, we are writing to announce the creation of the North Shore Israel Fund (NSIF). This Fund will provide funding for synagogues, agencies and self-starters to plan and run their own diverse Israel programming based on the needs of their community and will ensure that at various times throughout the year, North Shore residents have an opportunity to learn more about and connect to Israel.

The NSIF will outline its specific criteria for funding in its grant application. In general terms, all funded programs must be open to the public for free or a nominal charge and must include an educational or meaningful experiential component that teaches participants about Israel and/or its culture, people, history or language.

Funding for programming will be made available through a proposal process that will run throughout the year. Grants will be made in the range of $180 to $500.  The committee will reserve two grants for the commemoration of Yom HaZikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day, and celebration of Yom HaAtzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day.

The North Shore Israel Funds Committee will be made up of seven members, chaired by Nanette Fridman and staffed by Laura Shulman Brochstein of the JFNS.  The Committee will review all proposals on a rolling basis.

The North Shore Israel Fund is being founded with monies remaining from our community Israel at 60 and 61 events along with amount allocated yearly for Israel programs by the Jewish Federation of the North Shore.  Individual’s contributions are also welcomed.

Please note that proposals must be received, at the latest, one month before the scheduled event. To apply for a grant, please contact Laura Shulman Brochstein for an application at laurasb@jfns.org.
